Custom Puck Lights

Custom designed as a table centerpiece, compatible with industry standard stage lighting software. Wi-Fi enabled, receiving lighting commands using the Art-Net protocol.

Overview

My original idea was to create a wireless piece of stage lighting equipment that could be easily deployed for use in props and controlled alongside other lighting fixtures. After having the project on the backburner for a while, I had the opportunity to expand the project into a different scope. That brings us to today, where it's being designed for use in a venue setting, as a piece of table decor, customizable to the event's needs.

My Contribution

I was responsible for the overall design, hardware selection, and software development of the project.

Process

It first started as a simple idea to create a wireless lighting solution, but evolved into a more complex project with multiple components and considerations. The first prototype was nothing more than an Arduino Nano wired to a RGBW LED as a proof of concept. Then it moved into the development phase with the ESP-32 framework and integration of the Art-Net protocol. I also had to consider the power requirements, balancing form factor and functionality. Ultimately, I ended up going with a custom 2s2p 21700 battery pack. The long term plan is to refine the design by designing a custom PCB to replace the current components.

Challenges

Most of the challenges were related to the electrical design and integration of the various components. I'm not an electrical engineer, so I had to learn a lot of new concepts and techniques.

Outcome

The final product is still yet to exist, but I have a strong vision for the next steps.
